Maugher's First Major after ALMC Third overall!

Following on from his third place on the recent City North Hotel ALMC Stages Rally it all came right for Simon Mauger on the Tyneside Stages, round six of the MSA Asphalt Rally Championship, co-driven by Ashley Trimble, he guided his Ford Escort MkII to top spot on the Otterburn Ranges. It is the first time that such a car has won a round of a National Championship for many years and, consequently, gave much cause for celebration! Mauger accepted the John Horton Motorsport Management ‘Star Performance’ salver at the event prizegiving in recognition of his achievement.

In the absence of Championship leaders, Damian Cole/Craig Drew, John Stone – co-driven on this occasion by Patrick Walsh – took full advantage of the situation to put his Skoda Fabia WRC at the top of the timesheets on the opening stage. The leaderboard remained the same for the next one but a spin and stall on the third saw the Fabia drop to 3rd place. Having to slow for some errant cattle saw Stone drop a further place after SS4 but, clear of distractions, a determined fightback ensued. Mauger’s winning margin was reduced from 37 seconds after the fifth stage to just eight by the finish. One more stage and the leaderboard may well have had a different look to it!
Following his three wheeled exploits on the recent ALMC stages rally Mark Jasper with ALMC’s Don Whyatt alongside on the notes was one of the first to retire when their hired Hyundai Accent WRC slid off the road into a ditch at the end of a long straight on the opening stage. The second of the ALMC representatives Phil Merrills and William Kelly’s rally came to end due to a combination of suspension trouble and a badly cracked windscreen sustained when their Honda Civic Type ‘R’s bonnet flew up. With no spare to hand, they had no option but to put the car back on its trailer.
With three rounds to go, Mauger leads the race for the MSA Asphalt Championship Drivers’ title, with Stone second and Cole occupying the final podium spot. There is now a month to regroup before the next round of the REIS MSA Asphalt Rally Championship, the Eventsigns Mewla Rally, which takes us back to the Epynt Ranges on Sunday 29th August.

ALMC Stages Metro 6R 3 – A Competitors View

Mark Jasper with ALMC member and ace co-driver Don Whyatt tell the story of woe on the recent City North Hotel ALMC Stages Rally, when their Metro 6R4 became a 6R3. Don tells the story of how it all unfolded.
“Well, the guys arrived at my house from the ferry at 0600 on Saturday and started working on the car as it still wasn't finished, after many hours work they finished it at about 1600 and loaded everything up and set off to the HQ for scrutineering, which all went well. Due to work commitments Mark missed the recce as he didn't arrive until 2100 on Saturday night but having done the event over the last 2 years knew what sort of roads and layout the of event.

Sunday morning the car fired up OK and mark bedded in the new brake pads and discs on the way up to service, a quick check and we were off into stage 1, The car had an engine rebuild but off the line it just didn't seem to be pulling well and wasn't as crisp as expected, as the stage progressed the car was getting a bit smokey inside and we lost all brakes for the last 2 miles of the stage, when we stopped at the stop line there were clouds of smoke coming from the brakes.... so that was them bedded in properly now !!!!, off into stage 2 and the brakes felt better after they had a chance to cool. Still the car didn't seem too fast but we pushed on and no further problems on the stage, Stage 3 Off the start and the clutch seemed to be acting up as gear selection became harder and harder, then on a right hander the car snapped around and nearly threw us off the road, up the straight and it was a bit twitchy so mark thought we had a puncture, carrying on and it seemed ok so we pushed on, then when approaching Sweeney’ s pub in Kilbride the car was all over the road, so we slowed through the junction and up the straight, again it felt OK so we thought it maybe a drive shaft ??

Up the main road at 130 mph it felt fine then again on a right hand crossroads it snapped away, and felt as if we did in fact have a flat, so with only a few miles we decided to slowly press on to the finish, then on the approach to junction 10 ( the last Junction) we came
around a right hander, something black flashed past the window and the car sat down on the rear left corner.... the wheel had come off, we continued another 50m to park safely and when we got out saw that the wheel studs had sheared, Mark went cross country and got the wheel back. We picked the perfect place to stop as we were well looked after by the nice couple in the house we had stopped in front of, first a can of cold drink, followed by tea, sandwiches and a chocolate biscuit, and Mark even got to watch the Golf whille we waited until the service crew arrived.

The service crew changed the hub and we set off but the troubles were still not over as we had to keep switching the engine off to be able to select 1st gear so an eventful but short day, at least Mark was early for his flight, all be it by 4 hours and yes then just to cap off the day the flight was delayed by an hour. We are looking forward to next year as we will be back; it’s a brilliant event, well run and so friendly. Well done to Noel and his happy band at ALMC and a big thank you to all the marshals, see you next year!"
